As a general rule I’ve been trying to avoid buying any reissues of late, but every now and then a release comes along that I simply can’t resist, this latest release from the Now Again label being one.
For those not familiar with Now Again, if you’re a fan of funk, soul and psychedelia, there are few reissue labels around that can rival their quality levels, attention to detail and ethics when it comes to crediting the original artists involved.
Their latest release ‘Loving On The Flip Side’ is a perfect example of what they do best. Overseen by label boss Eothen ‘Egon’ Alapatt, this compilation looks to bring together a group of rare tracks that are essentially mid to slow temp soul tunes that are heavy on the drums. Lyrically it’s the usual soul ballad stories of lost love that you’d expect, but the rock solid rhythms that underpin most of these tunes make them feel almost uplifting.
Musical highlights include the stunning Thomas East – Slippin’ Around (a full length version that’s available for the first time and includes one of the longest open drum breaks you’re likely to hear) and the sweet harmonies of Darling Dears, who pop up with two tracks.
If that’s not enough, you also get a book containing a detailed write up on each of the artists involved and various photos of the original 7”s, artists promo shots etc.
Some real love and passion has been poured into this release and it shows. A definite front runner for the reissue compilation of the year.
